Tips on Trail Safety, Hydration, and Keeping Paws Safe on Rocky Terrain
As the weather warms up and wildflowers begin to bloom, Colorado’s trails are calling! From the foothills near Aurora to the scenic climbs in the Rockies, hiking with your dog is one of the best ways to enjoy the season. But before hitting the trail, it’s important to make sure your pup is safe, hydrated, and comfortable, from nose to tail.

1. Trail Safety First
Not all trails welcome pets, so start by researching dog-friendly routes. The City of Aurora and Colorado Parks and Wildlife websites are great resources for up-to-date regulations.
Leash rules matter: Even if your dog is well-trained, keeping them leashed protects both your pup and local wildlife.
Practice recall commands: “Come” and “leave it” can prevent accidents or encounters with wildlife or other hikers.
Watch the altitude: Dogs can feel altitude sickness, too. If your pup seems sluggish or uninterested in food or water, take a break and head back down.
2. Hydration and Nutrition
Colorado’s sunny skies and high altitude can dehydrate dogs quickly.
Always bring plenty of fresh water and a collapsible bowl.
Offer frequent small sips, and avoid letting your dog drink from streams as some contain harmful bacteria like Giardia.
Bring protein-packed snacks like dog jerky or dehydrated treats for longer hikes.

3. Paw Protection
Rugged terrain demands tough paws.
4. Be a Courteous Trail Partner
Respect the land and fellow hikers:
Always pick up your dog's waste. Leaving it behind harms the environment and other trail users.
Keep to one side of narrow trails to let others pass safely.
If another dog is coming your way, keep your pup close and calm.

5. Build Up Stamina Before Hitting Tough Trails
If your dog hasn’t been very active over the winter, don’t start with a 7-mile trek.
Begin with short walks on local trails around Aurora.
Gradually increase distance and elevation gain to build endurance and protect joints.
Senior dogs or small breeds may need shorter hikes with extra rest stops.
6. Protect Against Parasites
Warmer weather means ticks, fleas, and mosquitoes are back.
Make sure your pup’s flea and tick prevention is up to date.
After each hike, do a full-body tick check, especially around ears, paws, and underbelly.
Bring a tick removal tool just in case, you’ll thank yourself later!

7. Carry a Canine First Aid Kit
Be ready for small bumps along the way.
Include items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers (for ticks or thorns), and paw balm.
A basic first-aid course for pets is a great idea for frequent hikers. Care Fur Pawz can help you source resources or starter kits.
8. Don’t Forget Sun Protection
Yes, dogs can get sunburned too!
Light-colored or thin-coated pups benefit from pet-safe sunscreen on noses, ears, and bellies.
Seek out shady paths or hike early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid peak heat.
9. Mind Trail Etiquette with Wildlife and Livestock
Colorado trails often cross through wildlife habitats and grazing areas.
Keep your dog close when wildlife is nearby as chasing can put both animals in danger.
If you encounter livestock, pass calmly and quietly to avoid startling them.

10. Post-Hike Recovery
When you get home, give your dog time to unwind.
Offer water and a light meal after they’ve cooled down.
Check paws, fur, and ears for ticks, burrs, or scratches.
A quick rinse or wipe-down removes dirt, pollen, and allergens from their coat.
